Heart Attack That Nearly Put O'Donnell On Her Death Bed
The issue with the weight became even more hazardous for the actress, when she suffered a heart attack in August 2012. Luckily, it was a miracle that Rosie survived the life ending disease. Matter of fact, she was ignoring all the symptoms it had been there.

Rosie O'Donnell first felt the symptom of feeling sore over her body whilst helping a big woman get out of a car just a month ago of the first heart attack diagnosis. The symptoms were back later the same day when she couldn't move after feeling an ache on her chest. And, instead of seeking help after googling the symptoms, the actress took an aspirin.
As per O'Donnell, she was attacked by what doctors call it a 'widow maker' where the left artery of the heart is nearly blocked from feeding the heart. And it was only after finally seeking medical health care that advised Rosie to lose weight, she begun her journey.
O'Donnell Tried The Bill Clinton Vegan Diet
Determined to lose weight, O'Donnell then opted to go for a vegan diet similar to what she heard of the plant-based diet followed by the former President. The actress' diet wasn't completely vegan though as she was also consuming a light meat such as fish.

The actress even tried the Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn’s diet. Throughout her diet schedule to lose weight, Dr. Caldwell avoided her favorite indulgence. But to avoid consuming dairy, cheese, cheeseburger, and the steak was nothing but a pain in the arse for O'Donnell.
Unfortunately, despite being on a strict diet, O'Donnel's weight loss success was far from finished. Not a single positive result was found. Matter of fact, going vegan was something she couldn't continue to do so. And, in the end, O'Donnell decided to head for gastric bypass surgery.

When there's a will, there's definitely a way. And for Rosie O'Donnell who almost quit to achieve her goal, the actress found her solace in gastric bypass surgery where the surgeon removes nearly 90% of the stomach that eventually helps in losing weight.

It was Dr. Trivedi who performed the surgery on the actress. Just in two years, she lost over 50 pounds and weighed near 176 Ibs from previously weighing 240 Ibs. And, O'Donnel says the Gastric surgery changed her life.
Following her heart attack and surgery journey, Rosie O'Donnell publicly supported the campaign for the American Heart Association to spread awareness on the risk of the disease and weight issue.
