Kevin Smith was inspired to work as a filmmaker by Richard Linklater after learning that his movie Slacker was filmed in his hometown, Austin, Texas. He was 21 at the time. Also whilst studying at Henry Hudson Regional High School, Smith was fond of recording basketball games and making comedy skits inspired by Saturday Night Live.

Smith has also filmed short movies and contributed to numerous television series. One of his first short movies includes The Flying Car which was released in February 2002. As for his television series, Smith has directed Reaper, three of the episodes for The Flash and The Goldbergs and four episodes for Supergirl.

The director also produced and appeared in the reality tv show called Comic Book Men which ran from 2012 till 2018 for seven seasons. The show showcased Kevin's comic book shop based off in New Jersey. Smith also ran a talk show called Spoilers with Kevin Smith which ran from 2012 till 2014.

In 2000, Smith alongside Mosier developed an animated version of Clerks titled Clerks: The Animated Series which, unfortunately, ran for only two episodes due to low rating. A DVD of the series was later released with six episodes. Smith also appeared as himself in animated movies including Teen Titans: The Judas Contract.

Besides, Kevin also directed commercials for Coca-Cola in 1998, Nike and Diet Coke in 1998, Panasonic in 2000, Hasbro Stars Wars toy, Declare Yourself organization to promote youths in registering in 2004 and several commercials for MTV in the mid-90s.

Smith has appeared in many of his own directed and produced films. He played a minor role of Silent Bob in Clerks, Chasing Amy, Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, and Mallrats. He even appeared in a few of the episodes of his favorite tv show; Degrassi: The Next Generation where he wrote his own dialogues in 2005.

Not to mention, he even made a slight feature in the Canadian drama adapted tv movie called Degrassi: The Next Generation.
